APM Chinese New Year Fire Rooster Tournament at the Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL

11 February 2017

This was an auspicious day being the very last day of the Chinese New Year celebration or as we call it in Singapore, "Chap Go Mei", the 15 th day of the Lunar New Year.

It so happens to be one of the hottest day in February.

The Tournament Directors and I turned up at the CHPRSL at 7.30 am in the morning getting organised for the Big Day where we have 192 players registered to play.

I had all the special Chinese New Year gifts and name tags ready as the players start streaming in.

As this is the year of the Fire Rooster, we had prizes given away to the oldest male and female member as well as the youngest member who were all born in the year of the Rooster.

We shall let you guess who these members may represent.

The tournament started with Mike reading the Rules for the day with players listening very attentively.

Unfortunately, due to the extreme heat on the day, the air-conditioning gave up and was out for a few hours whilst the technician did what he could to get it up and running in a few hours' time. It was fortuitous that we have given our players a fan each in their lucky CNY gift bag. Despite the heat, our players were all very happy and enjoying the lunch break

I would like to present to you, all our good looking and hard working Tournament Directors on the day. They all did a splendid job despite the heat. Keep Smiling boys!!!

Our Brisbane members who have travelled 1000 kilometres to come and join us

I am pleased to announce 2 of our Brisbane players came in the top 16!!

I have always believed in sharing more cash prizes with more players in a big tournament and being Chinese New Year, it is auspicious to be giving players who rank, 8th 18th 28th 38th 48th 58th 68th 78th 88th 98th 108th 118th 128th 138th 148th 158 th 168th 178th and 188th .Here are all our lucky players.

The Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL has also kindly given away the beautiful Egg Tarts and Mango pancakes to all our players during our afternoon break.

After 4.30 pm the players were broken up into 2 groups, the top 32 players into a quiet room in the basement whereas the remaining players are all moved into another room for their $2000 side game.

2 gigantic portable air conditioners were wheeled into the room to help cool the players. I must applaud the players who remain cool and calm throughout the tournament.

After dinner, we were all treated to a special performance by the Mandarin Band with compliments of Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL. Players got up to dance throughout the night and having a great time whilst the 32 top players battled on.

Our winners ranking 17th to 32nd places are as follows:

Our top 16 winners

Our very happy and excited top 4 winners

Our Highest Hand Score for Men and Ladies

Our Lucky Name Tag winner

Happy Birthday to all our players for the month of February. They each get a birthday card and a lucky lottery ticket. Some have of the players have won some monies!!

Good luck to all and a very happy birthday to you.

By the time the Tournament Directors completely stored away all the tables and tiles and packed our equipment into our Van and their various cars, it was almost 12 midnight.

I am sure all the players including the tournament directors were absolutely exhausted but I feel confident that everyone had a great time.

I wish to thank each and every one who participated in the day's event. Without you, it will not be the successful event we had.

I want to also thank our Sponsor, Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL, without whom, we will not have been able to bring this event to all our players.

I look forward to our next Spring Mahjong Tournament at the Wenty Leagues on 24 September 2017 and I promise to bring to all our players an equally exciting game.

See you all very soon.

With Best Wishes,

Pauline Heng

We are pleased to announce that we RAISED $2640.00 at the Charity Mahjong tournament held at the Epping Club on Sunday, 2 November 2014! All monies raised are donated to Alzheimers Australia NSW.

On a bright and sunny Sunday morning at 9 am, players began to arrive at the Epping Club. They were all really happy and in great spirit knowing that their presence this Sunday morning would make a little difference to the research and care provided for someone suffering from dementia.

What is Alzheimerˇ¦s disease? You can read more about it here: https://nsw.fightdementia.org.au/about-dementia-and-memory-loss/about-dementia/types-of-dementia/alzheimers-disease

Alzheimerˇ¦s Australia provides a range of sensitive and flexible services to support people with any type of dementia, their families and carers throughout the illness.

Many players have expressed that this is a very worthwhile cause to support especially when the average age of our players are 65 years and thereabouts.

We would like to thank the Epping Club for their tremendous support with their generous supply of sandwiches, fresh fruits, juices and beverages as well as hampers and food vouchers as prizes. We would also like to thank the Lions Club Sydney Waratah, the Pink Ladies, for coming to support this cause and also contributing to the various prizes. Once again, Trophyland has been very generous with their donation of Trophies for the tournament. We thank you very much for these beautiful trophies to remind the winners of their participation in this great charity mahjong tournament. Last but not least, we would like to thank 2AC Chinese Radio Station for broadcasting the Charity tournament and bringing awareness to their listeners about Alzheimerˇ¦s Australia for the past month. Most of all we would like to thank all mahjong players who have perticipated in the charity tournament

Should anyone wish to donate further to Alzheimerˇ¦s Australia direct, you can also go to their : online donation form . Any donation over $2 will be tax deductible.

Thank you all once again for this great participation.
